Throughout the end of August I was moving into the new place – no carpets, gas stove, and we are +2 kitties. Downsides – but worth it – no AC (we got window units). And it’s an older building so, electricity is a bit uppity. (Nothing some well placed UPS’ can’t fix for the most part.)

So! Onto the tour!

The kitchen. It seems small, but has at least 1/3 more the amount of cupboard space as the old place, and since there will are 1-less persons here, plenty of room. (check out the flip up extra counter/table space as well!)

Other side of kitchen.

And another view:

Kitchen

Next room over is the dining room – which we are using as an half office / my bar table by the window. It’s nice though, because it is in it’s own room, and not pretty much part of the kitchen like the last place. Those are more cupboards in the dining room. So even more space! Viewing into our living room, and the entry way door.

View From the Dining Room

Viewing through the living room to the dining room from the entry!

View from the Entry

From the entry to and looking the other way down the hall! Door right, roommates room. Left, closet, then linen closet. Around corner, bathroom, my room.

View from the Entry - Looking down the hall

Then a view of my room. (This is only the one half, there is another half with a closet and everything but HAH. You don’t get to see that!)

My Bedroom

And there you have it. Maybe I’ll put some more up after we unpack the rest of the way.

To tide you over – a pic of my desklamp.

New lamp!

Day three shenanigans began rather late, since the Archivist and I just couldn’t get up.

First we went to see the Host’s horses. They aren’t actually hers, but she takes classes and rides through a local stable, and the Archivist LOVES horses. We spent several hours meeting pretty much every horse that wasn’t currently in a lesson, watching several of the lessons, and feeding carrots to the well behaved ones. The Archivist drove us out to the stables, so when we returned we had to find a parking spot on the street on a Sunday. We spent about 20 minutes looking for a non-permit parking location. (Also, I am apparently the only one who knows how to parallel park apparently. So any parking that didn’t happen in a perpendicular space, was done by me. >.> )

After the stable we finally got in to see the National Archives. Photos weren’t allowed inside, so I don’t have any from this. Safe to say the Archivist was overjoyed and could probably have spent the rest of the day there. Since we were in DC in the off season though, everything closes at five so we had to shuffle her out of there as fast as we could. This of course led to almost a half hour in the gift shop, since the Archivist is a serial shopper, and had souvenirs to get for many many people.

Our next stop was the Museum of Natural Science. The only exhibit we really saw was one one identifying and learning about the lives of people who were found in abandoned settlement cemeteries. Pretty interesting.

Here is a photo of SEA CREATURES.

So many sea creatures, so little time...

We didn’t go through all the other amazing exhibits, as the Archivist wanted to hit some more gift shops hardcore. We went through three of them at this museum, but I also found some nifty magnets for people, so that was bearable.

Of course, we had ONE MORE that the archivist wanted to go to at American History Museum? (I think! I can’t be sure. Proper nouns are very hard.)

We only really saw the lobby here – but LOOK WHO ELSE WAS HANGING AROUND.

C3PO

Unfortunately, it was rolling on to closing time for everything, so after this we zoomed back to the Host’s residence.

The Archivist had to leave early, as she expected her drive to take a bit longer and had to work the next day. She took the last of our left-over gyoza and asian food for along the way. Of course, one hour after she left she called and ask “is my camera still on the end table.” Why yes Archivist, your camera is still here. There was some phone negotiating for who mails what to who and where.

Shortly after, my host and I went out to see if we could find something to eat for a late dinner. We walked about a mile and ended up at a Ruby Tuesdays across from some shopping center calling and it a night shortly after that.

The next day was my last, we didn’t get to exciting, just wandered about Georgetown area for a while. Also saw a library that would make the Archivist Madly Jealous.

THE LIBRARY

And more library pron:

THE LIBRARY

And here is a shot of a post office!

THE OLD POST OFFICE

We took it easy for most of the afternoon, until it was time to head off to the airport. Goodbye DC!

The move is a week away! I’ve been closing up all the final loopholes I needed to get done. I have signed some papers, run back and forth to MN (and dropped off half the tech, breakables and houseplants,) had my address changed at every place important (minus one back in MN. ) Now I just have to make it through this week of work (pre-end-of-phase-about-to-send-to-QA-work-scramble) and pack this weekend.

Ugh. Packing. Anyone want to pack for me? I have pepperoni, half an onion and coconut rum in my fridge, I’m sure I could fix up something worthy of the work…

I’m probably one of the only people that is happy to have this furlough, since I didn’t have to take a week of PTO to move, or (horror!) work part of the week. I can’t even be called in, or anything since I’m technically ‘teporarally’ laid off for the week. Which is ‘kinda funny since I’m taking all my work equipment with me – on my move – 300 miles away. It would be nice to be if it was paid, but then it would be a furlough. Hopefully the biz turns around. But at least I’ll be somewhere where there is a larger pool of opportunities or at least a larger personal support network.

I’m looking forward to working remotely. It’s going to be a challenge, not being right there where my coworkers are. Though half of our office (the half I actually have to deal with directly the most) is actually all the way over in Cincinnati – so none of that will change at all.

On another topic – I’m using a pre-made theme for my blog, but I want to make my own. I’m pretty awesome at the css/js/html/coding thing. Maybe I should show it off a bit – since I sorta do it for a living. I also need to make something for this forum I have waiting to be pushed. Any ideas suggestions? Orange is a must, but should I do something plain, yet classy? Easy on the eyes, yet stylish? (ORANGE CAN TOO!) Nifty graphics and smooth lines (curves, snazzy borders)? Simple and minimalist? Busy but not too busy? Columns/rows?

Long time not blog Internet! I’ve been busy. Up to Minnesota for the holiday, then back down, and work work work.

I still haven’t gotten the final word on the apartment. Though we were told that all our info checks went through fine, they were just waiting for rental history contacts to get back to them. Supposedly they will stop trying if it takes too long. Not sure why one of them wouldn’t contact back, they both have full-time staffing. Oh well, that is how it goes.

Saw Fast & Furious last Saturday. Was a fall back to the first one, and pretty good. I actually liked this one better than the first. I would recommend it to anyone who likes action, cars, or Vin Diesel, or any combination thereof.

Finished Dresden Files: Turncoat. Another excellent book Mr. Butcher. Next up is a stack of trashy romance novels. I know, I know, but they are addictive!

The crappiness that happened first was that there were some layoffs at work. It’s what happens when your company’s income is reliant on the news industry, and we can only staff based on what we are making and how much work we have. It’s sad to see them go and I wish them luck in their future endeavors. Hopefully these newspapers will get their shtick figured out, cause the uncertainty of this business’ future reminds me of senior year of high school while I was still worried about whole real world thing. By the way, I’m still worried. Please don’t come for me real world.

The rest of the crappiness is the reason I didn’t write anything last week – it was just a really crappy week (really the morning before the layoffs was pretty crappy too) and the week seemed to just go down hill from there. Everything from missing my alarm, migraine’s, and spilling tortellini all over the kitchen, most of it not retrievable (there went dinner). Things started looking up after I got to Minnesota at least.

Also, I’m not going to Alaska this year. My travel companion has had a change in employment status, and will not be able to afford to go for the foreseeable future so our trip is cancelled. Hopefully we get a chance to go eventually. It’s unfortunate, but one can only plan so far in the future, and for something that was planned 9 months in advanced… Well, plans rarely make it all the way through.

Now I have some money that I had allotted for a trip freed up. I’m going to save most of it, but maybe I should do something with what is left (some is going to visit said friend. I never wanted to go to DC, but there are lots of museums and things there, and that would be nifty.) I have been looking at tablet PC’s. Anyone have any experience with those? Toshiba/HP/Fujitsu? I have a desktop for power/gaming etc, so it’s just going to be misc. mobile pc (that I can write on! and maybe read ebooks etc where ever and I can FLIP THE SCREEN! Why dont’ they make all laptops like that…) It will probably take me all the way till the time I was going to have the trip to decide if I actually want to purchase it though. (Any individual thing more than $50 seems like a big purchase to me. Which is why I only have one guitar for my Guitar Hero. They are just so expensive for a controller!)

Also, just a note for broadcast news (regarding some happenings around tax day). Please don’t try to make up words. You are failing. They already exist. Please see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I64Ed5iLu4M&

And to leave you with a very cute and cheesy video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uy0HNWto0UY

Now back to catching up on The Daily Show and Colbert Report.

(PS. I updated my computer’s networking drivers to the most recent manufacturer ones, and have not had any trouble since. Yay!)
