Snow is coming …according to predictions

Posted by | Posted in RealLife, Work | Posted on 08-10-2009

I really don’t know how software devs handle working on the same thing for so long.  I’ve been working on this one pieces of a large project at work, and I’ve been practically going cross eyed.  Today I was given a bit of a break(a different part had more priority, and needed some extra hands) and got moved over to @qrevolution ‘s section of the project.  It was refreshing. Something new.  Working on the same thing for so long, it gets harder to keep perspective.

I’m also all ready for the SNOW that is supposed to happen this weekend.  Even acquired some snow boots for the first time in years. Before that happens though, anyone know any good places in MN close to the Twin Cities for taking fall photos?  Or getting pumpkins?  Planning a field trip this weekend.

Also, I’m watching Ghost Hunters right now, and …MEATLOAF is on it.  O.o Good show Mr. Loaf.

Roommate #1 got me watching TV.  Just finished glee.  so goofy.  I can’t look away.  Plus, NCIS, Bones, soon sgu, house.  I don’t really know how people watch all this.

Also, ask me about the stickies!  Found this nifty stickies on  webpages app.  I’ll link you to the land of stickies.  Take a glance at its home here: http://websticki.es/

Now, back to setting up something clever…

Weather!

Posted by | Posted in Art, RealLife | Posted on 10-08-2009

Going camping!  It’s gong to be awesome.  Also, being on vacation and not having to worry about moving will be great.  (Even if that wasn’t a ‘real’ vacation.   I was going to take it off regardless.)

Also, here are some photos from the storm this weekend:

There is more to come – as well as more at deviantart. Go ahead and take a look.

Nothing much to say…

Season 2 of NCIS has begun!  In the meantime I’ve unpacked my books and pottery and filled my shelves with anything shelf full.  Now I just have 2 misc stuff boxes to unpack and some speakers to hook up to various things.

Roommate #2 will be moving in soon!  Sister graduated!  I’m not doing housework at my parents house anymore!  I might have time to Internet and read soon!

ANY OMG OPERA HAS BUILT IN SPELL CHECK IN 10!   Still in alpha/beta but looks pretty good.

There are two things I miss about Iowa.  Hyvee and Thunderstorms.  We don’t get nearly enough nice ones up here.

All moved!

Posted by | Posted in RealLife | Posted on 01-06-2009

In the new apartment, mostly settled. I still need to pick up some more shelves, and setup some AV stuff. (There are more than twice as many computers to people living here.) Otherwise been working for two weeks and it’s going good! Hopefully that keeps up.

The house plants are very happy too. Lots of morning sunlight. Possibly too much. Since I keep waking up early and thinking I woke up hours late because of how bright it is. And not being able to go back to sleep hours early cause you woke up in a panic is very very lame.

Still waiting on Roommate #2 to move it. That won’t be till mid this month.

Otherwise Roommate #1 and I have been watching season one of NCIS. Liking it so far and I hear it only gets better.

Well. Pretty much done packing. Jus a small amount of misc. And packing the rest of the car and then it is just a bit of cleaning and waiting for the movers tomorrow. I’m not really going to miss Iowa but there were a few things here I liked that I might miss. If you haven’t heard yet my little sister is going to the same college as I did so I’ll be back down dropping/picking her up/off.

Almost outa here!

The move is a week away! I’ve been closing up all the final loopholes I needed to get done. I have signed some papers, run back and forth to MN (and dropped off half the tech, breakables and houseplants,) had my address changed at every place important (minus one back in MN. )  Now I just have to make it through this week of work (pre-end-of-phase-about-to-send-to-QA-work-scramble) and pack this weekend.

Ugh. Packing.  Anyone want to pack for me?  I have pepperoni, half an onion and coconut rum in my fridge, I’m sure I could fix up something worthy of the work…

I’m probably one of the only people that is happy to have this furlough, since I didn’t have to take a week of PTO to move, or (horror!) work part of the week.  I can’t even be called in, or anything since I’m technically ‘teporarally’ laid off for the week.  Which is ‘kinda funny since I’m taking all my work equipment with me – on my move – 300 miles away.  It would be nice to be if it was paid, but then it would be a furlough.  Hopefully the biz turns around.  But at least I’ll be somewhere where there is a larger pool of opportunities or at least a larger personal support network.

I’m looking forward to working remotely.  It’s going to be a challenge, not being right there where my coworkers are.  Though half of our office (the half I actually have to deal with directly the most) is actually all the way over in Cincinnati – so none of that will change at all.

On another topic – I’m using a pre-made theme for my blog, but I want to make my own.  I’m pretty awesome at the css/js/html/coding thing.  Maybe I should show it off a bit – since I sorta do it for a living.  I also need to make something for this forum I have waiting to be pushed.  Any ideas suggestions?  Orange is a must, but should I do something plain, yet classy?  Easy on the eyes, yet stylish? (ORANGE CAN TOO!)  Nifty graphics and smooth lines (curves, snazzy borders)? Simple and minimalist? Busy but not too busy? Columns/rows?

Crappy weeks and changes in plans.

Posted by | Posted in computers, RealLife | Posted on 18-04-2009

Long time not blog Internet!  I’ve been busy.  Up to Minnesota for the holiday, then back down, and work work work.

I still haven’t gotten the final word on the apartment.  Though we were told that all our info checks went through fine, they were just waiting for rental history contacts to get back to them.  Supposedly they will stop trying if it takes too long.  Not sure why one of them wouldn’t contact back, they both have full-time staffing.  Oh well, that is how it goes.

Saw Fast & Furious last Saturday.  Was a fall back to the first one, and pretty good.  I actually liked this one better than the first.  I would recommend it to anyone who likes action, cars, or Vin Diesel, or any combination thereof.

Finished Dresden Files: Turncoat.  Another excellent book Mr. Butcher.  Next up is a stack of trashy romance novels.  I know, I know, but they are addictive!

The crappiness that happened first was that there were some layoffs at work.  It’s what happens when your company’s income is reliant on the news industry, and we can only staff based on what we are making and how much work we have.  It’s sad to see them go and I wish them luck in their future endeavors.  Hopefully these newspapers will get their shtick figured out, cause the uncertainty of this business’ future reminds me of senior year of high school while I was still worried about whole real world thing.  By the way, I’m still worried.  Please don’t come for me real world.

The rest of the crappiness is the reason I didn’t write anything last week – it was just a really crappy week (really the morning before the layoffs was pretty crappy too) and the week seemed to just go down hill from there.  Everything from missing my alarm, migraine’s, and spilling tortellini all over the kitchen, most of it not retrievable (there went dinner).  Things started looking up after I got to Minnesota at least.

Also, I’m not going to Alaska this year.  My travel companion has had a change in employment status, and will not be able to afford to go for the foreseeable future so our trip is cancelled.  Hopefully we get a chance to go eventually.  It’s unfortunate, but one can only plan so far in the future, and for something that was planned 9 months in advanced…  Well, plans rarely make it all the way through.

Now I have some money that I had allotted for a trip freed up.  I’m going to save most of it, but maybe I should do something with what is left (some is going to visit said friend.  I never wanted to go to DC, but there are lots of museums and things there, and that would be nifty.)  I have been looking at tablet PC’s.  Anyone have any experience with those? Toshiba/HP/Fujitsu?  I have a desktop for power/gaming etc, so it’s just going to be misc. mobile pc (that I can write on! and maybe read ebooks etc where ever and I can FLIP THE SCREEN!  Why dont’ they make all laptops like that…)  It will probably take me all the way till the time I was going to have the trip to decide if I actually want to purchase it though. (Any individual thing more than $50 seems like a big purchase to me.  Which is why I only have one guitar for my Guitar Hero.  They are just so expensive for a controller!)

Also, just a note for broadcast news (regarding some happenings around tax day).  Please don’t try to make up words.  You are failing.  They already exist.  Please see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I64Ed5iLu4M&

And to leave you with a very cute and cheesy video:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uy0HNWto0UY

Now back to catching up on The Daily Show and Colbert Report.

(PS. I updated my computer’s networking drivers to the most recent manufacturer ones, and have not had any trouble since.  Yay!)

Computer woes and potstickers!

Posted by | Posted in computers, RealLife | Posted on 06-04-2009

Don’t you just hate it when your computer is on the fritz?

For the last week or so my desktop has been randomly losing access to my home network.  It would be chugging along, interneting etc. and suddenly I have an ip, I can (sometimes) even renew my ip but will not be able to ping in network or out or access the Internet through any applications.  After a few days of troubleshooting, resetting default settings checking the router (who survived being over powered by the wrong cord with little to no noticeable damage aside from some dead LEDs), removing the one newly installed program, and being baffled that it was spontaneously telling me I was on a 1Gbt network (I’m not and with no connectivity?).  Nothing worked.

Eventually I downloaded the latest drivers (mine were from February but there was a new release that I didn’t have from last week.)  So far I haven’t had the problem again.  Which is good.  I don’t want to stick another network card in there or wrangle a new wire through the wall so close to moving out.  I have not idea why it would just suddenly start to flail.  Maybe my magic blue smoke turned purple or something.

With that hopefully in hand – tomorrow I’m going to try my hand at pot stickers.  It took me forever to find the won-ton wrappers but I eventually prevailed (why are they not by the other tofu Target!)  They will be beef not pork with various things in them.  Anyone have any non peppers suggestions?

Also!  for those who haven’t heard, they are making another Fullmetal Alchemist series that will more closely follow the ongoing manga!  The first episode is out in Japan, and Funimation claims they will be streaming it shortly after each release.  There were some other video upload sites that had it, you can search for those on your own if you are interested.

Eagerly awaiting the arrival of Watchmen and the new Dresden Files book…
