Last weekend I did some upgrades on my computer (failing hard drive/OS) and while I was at it, figured I would install Windows 7 instead of XP. Well, aside from a period of 20 minutes where the screen was blank and mouseless and it was thinking really, really hard before displaying the login screen after SP1 (showed up while I was frantically searching for solutions – and boots fine now so… >.> ) everything had so far started working with little to no issues.

Today, I wanted to burn something to DVD – Windows 7 saw what my optical drive was, had already loaded in the drivers (it was on the compatible hardware list) and read everything fine, but…. wouldn’t recognize it as a device capable of burning.

I go out searching for possibly solutions, and come up with Microsoft FixIt (and specifically for DVD issues if someone comes across this needing a fix.).

But when I see this:

Microsoft Fixit

all I can think of is this:

There I Fixed It

and this:

There I Fixed It

and any other computer repair horror. (Really! He has a wrench! IT’S SRS BSNS PEOPLE!)

Which leaves me visualizing

Microsoft Fixit

putting some

Duct Tape

inside my computer and saying:
“There! I fixed it!”

So, if you have a working DVD RW drive, but windows 7 (or vista) doesn’t recognize it’s burn capabilities? all you need is some .

I also caught that I pretty much stick everything I’ve added to my work comp in my home directory. I have no time for basic organization apparently.

Don’t you just hate it when your computer is on the fritz?

For the last week or so my desktop has been randomly losing access to my home network. It would be chugging along, interneting etc. and suddenly I have an ip, I can (sometimes) even renew my ip but will not be able to ping in network or out or access the Internet through any applications. After a few days of troubleshooting, resetting default settings checking the router (who survived being over powered by the wrong cord with little to no noticeable damage aside from some dead LEDs), removing the one newly installed program, and being baffled that it was spontaneously telling me I was on a 1Gbt network (I’m not and with no connectivity?). Nothing worked.

Eventually I downloaded the latest drivers (mine were from February but there was a new release that I didn’t have from last week.) So far I haven’t had the problem again. Which is good. I don’t want to stick another network card in there or wrangle a new wire through the wall so close to moving out. I have not idea why it would just suddenly start to flail. Maybe my magic blue smoke turned purple or something.

With that hopefully in hand – tomorrow I’m going to try my hand at pot stickers. It took me forever to find the won-ton wrappers but I eventually prevailed (why are they not by the other tofu Target!) They will be beef not pork with various things in them. Anyone have any non peppers suggestions?

Also! for those who haven’t heard, they are making another Fullmetal Alchemist series that will more closely follow the ongoing manga! The first episode is out in Japan, and Funimation claims they will be streaming it shortly after each release. There were some other video upload sites that had it, you can search for those on your own if you are interested.

Eagerly awaiting the arrival of Watchmen and the new Dresden Files book…
